Maine Lawsuit Loans for Mass Tort, Abuse & Complex Cases

Maine lawsuit loans help plaintiffs whose claim is filed and handled by a lawyer, or whose settlement is being finished.

Advances cover $500 to $250,000+ and are non-recourse: lose the case, and you don’t repay a cent.

Maine’s Legal Funding Law

Maine has regulated consumer legal funding since January 1, 2008, through its Consumer Credit Code. In Maine, your funding contract is written by a litigation funder registered with the state, as Maine law requires.

State lawLegal funding rules in the Maine Consumer Credit Code. Last changed in 2021.
Rate capNone. The law does limit how long charges run and how often they can compound.
Right to cancelYou can back out within five business days of receiving the funds, by returning them in person or by mail.
Disclosure ruleA payoff table goes on the first page. A notice above your signature says how to check a funder’s registration, and your lawyer signs a statement.
RegistrationFunders register with the Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection and post a bond.
Effective dateJanuary 1, 2008.
As ofOctober 28, 2026.

Maine contracts also can’t force you into arbitration. The law protects Maine residents who have a lawyer on a pending claim. Funders must also report their deals to the state each year.

Do I qualify?

Yes, assuming a lawyer filed the claim or it’s being settled.

  • A lawyer represents you for a contingency fee (your lawyer is paid only if you win).
  • Your lawsuit is filed in Maine, or a settlement agreement is in progress.
  • Your claim belongs to a type we back: a mass tort (many people hurt by the same product or exposure), a maritime injury, abuse or a business case.
  • The defendant can afford to pay, whether a shipping firm, a manufacturer, a diocese or an employer.

People call it a lawsuit loan. It’s a non-recourse advance, not a loan: if you lose, you owe nothing.

Filed outside Maine? Look up the states we cover; where the case was filed is the test. Your work history and credit score don’t enter into it, and there’s no need for collateral.

How it works

Maine lawsuit loans unfold over four steps, with your lawyer checking the contract along the way.

1. Get started

Use the website to apply, or dial 888-335-3537. Describe the claim and say who your lawyer is.

2. Talk to your lawyer

We check where the case stands with your lawyer and whether a lien (money that must be paid back from the settlement first) applies.

3. See your offer

We can’t quote a price here: it depends on the amount and how long the case runs. Your written offer shows the exact total before you sign.

4. Receive funds

Once everyone signs, we pay by wire or by check. Your lawyer pays us from the settlement before passing the rest to you.

Maine Lawsuit Loans for Sea, Abuse and Product Cases

Fishing crews and other seamen hurt at work sue under a federal law, the Jones Act. They’re also owed maintenance and cure (living and medical pay a ship owner owes an injured seaman). That pay is owed whatever caused the injury.

Our Jones Act funding page covers those claims. Injured rail workers have a similar federal claim under FELA.

Are there drug or device cases in Maine’s court?

No MDL (similar federal cases grouped before one judge) sits in Maine’s federal court. Mainers with those claims are joined to national cases elsewhere, funded through our mass tort page.

A move into an MDL doesn’t change funding: the first court to take the case is what counts.

Do Maine abuse survivors face a deadline?

No, for most claims. Maine set no time limit for abuse claims that hadn’t already run out by 2000, or for any abuse since.

A 2021 law tried to revive older claims, but Maine’s top court struck that down in 2025. Suits against a town or the state follow separate notice rules.

Church abuse claims are covered on our clergy abuse page, and others on our sexual abuse page.

Which other Maine cases qualify?

What affects how much I can get?

Nothing is advanced until the claim is in court. Large liens or a defendant with few assets can lower the figure. The likely value of the claim and how long it may run matter too.

You can see every type we handle under cases we fund.

Maine Lawsuit Loan Questions

Not finding an answer? Send your question via the contact page.

Must funders register in Maine?

Yes. Maine has required it since 2008. Each contract must tell you where to check a funder’s registration.

When can I cancel an advance?

Within five business days of receiving the funds. Return every dollar, in person or by mail, as your contract explains.

Can old abuse claims still be filed in Maine?

Claims that hadn’t expired by 2000, and later abuse, have no deadline. In 2025 Maine’s top court said older, expired claims can’t be revived.

Does my lawyer have a role in the contract?

Yes. Maine requires a written statement from your lawyer that they reviewed the contract and its costs.

Is the money mine to spend as I like?

Yes. Rent, bills or costs of the case are all fine. A lost case also leaves you owing nothing.

Maine Lawsuit Loans for a Long Case

Some cases against big companies run on and on. Maine lawsuit loans cover living costs in the meantime, so a slow case won’t push you into a cheap deal.

Advances here are non-recourse: nothing recovered, nothing repaid. This page sums up Maine law in plain terms, not as legal advice.
